Big Weekend of Racing This Past Weekend

There was a lot of racing action this weekend and a lot of news coming out of it, so lets get to business!

First off this weekend saw the double header for the OCRS as the series visited Outlaw Motor Speedway on Friday and West Siloam Speedway on Saturday.  Friday night at the Outlaw saw Rafe Essary drive past Jamie Passmore to take the win.  Mike Goodman was in the lead until his motor blew.  This gave Passmore the lead until Essary found a groove that worked great and he drove past Passmore in a way that I have not seen anyone pass him in a long time.  Passmore looked like he was barely moving as Essary went around in his brand new chassis.  15 cars were on hand for the Outlaw event and a few motors were lost on the way although nobody took a flip and that was a plus.  Dean Drake lost a motor while Matt Sherrell and Goodman also lost a side panel off their top wings.  Essary took the win with Passmore 2nd and Shane Pace 3rd.  Matt Sherrell held on to 4th while Zach Beeler held on for his 1st top 5 of the season.  Here are the results for Outlaw

HEAT 1 - 1, Mike Goodman. 2, Rafe Essary. 3, Jamie McDonald. 4, Zach Beeler. 5, Dean Drake, Jr.

HEAT 2 - 1, Matt Sherrell. 2, Danny Smith. 3, Kenneth Walker. 4, Tim Kent. Ron Paris, Jr.

HEAT 3 - 1, Jamie Passmore. 2, Shane Pace. 3, Evan Sewell. 4, Burt Davis. 5, Brian Roberts..

A FEATURE - 1, Rafe Essary. 2, Jamie Passmore. 3, Shane Pace. 3, Matt Sherrell. 5, Zach Beeler. 6, Ron Paris, Jr. 7, Danny Smith. 8, Mike Goodman. 9, Kenneth Walker. 10, Dean Drake, Jr. 11, Evan Sewell. 12, Brian Roberts. 13, Jamie McDonald. 14, Burt Davis. DNS: Tim Kent.

The next night at West Siloam saw 18 cars on hand.  Drake and Paris Jr were not there but several more cars were there including Bryan Parker, Travis Jenkins, Andrew Deal, Brett Thompson, and Nigel Calvert.  Once again Mike Goodman saw a victory go up in flames as he took the lead from Kenneth Walker but blew the motor again.  Walker did not release the lead again although Rafe Essary was on his tail for most of the way.  Jamie Passmore held on to 3rd while Matt Sherrell was 4th and Danny Smith 5th.

HEAT 1 - 1, Mike Goodman. 2, Travis Jenkins. 3, Kenneth Walker. 4, Brian Parker. 5, Zach Beeler. 6, Evan Sewell.

HEAT 2 - 1, Jamie Passmore. 2, Matt Sherrell. 3, Nigel Calvert. 4, Andrew Deal. 5, Danny Smith. 6, Tim Kent.

HEAT 3 - 1, Rafe Essary. 2, Shane Pace. 3, Burt Davis. 4, Jamie McDonald. 5, Brett Thompson. 6, Brian Roberts.

A FEATURE - 1, Kenneth Walker. 2, Rafe Essary. 3, Jamie Passmore. 4, Matt Sherrell. 5, Danny Smith. 6, Shane Pace. 7, Jamie McDonald. 8, Evan Sewell. 9, Zach Beeler. 10, Brett Thompson. 11, Travis Jenkins. 12, Burt Davis. 13, Andrew Deal. 14, Tim Kent. 15, Brian Roberts. 16, Mike Goodman. 17, Nigel Calvert. 18, Brian Parker.

After this weekend of action Jamie Passmore still holds on to the points lead although Matt Sherrell has reclaimed 2nd over Mike Goodman, who now sits in 3rd. Danny Smith sits in 4th while Shane Pace still claims the 5th spot in points standings.  The twist here is that Goodman's car owner David Stephenson is unsure he will have another motor together and so Goodman's spot in the standings could be in jeopardy.  We'll keep you posted over the next week and a half until the next weekend of OCRS races.  Speaking of the next OCRS races, they are Sept 12th for the final stop at Outlaw Motor Speedway and Sept 13th for action at Ada Motorsports Park.  Both shows could see some Oklahoma City cars as the points racing is done at OKC and all that is left is the Winter Nationals.

Speaking of OKC, State Fair Speedway ran Friday and wrapped up the points racing on Sunday.  The big news of the weekend was Shayla Waddell, the youngster who took home her first A-feature win of her rookie season in the champ sprints.  Waddell finished her rookie campaign in 7th in the points standings and also picked up a 3rd place finish on Sunday night, ending her first season on a very high note.  Brian Bishop took home the Sunday night champ sprint win and Michelle Decker took home the champ sprint championship.  Joe Wood Jr took home the super sprint win on Sunday night while Bruce Jennings won Friday night.  Danny Jennings won the super sprint championship.

Speaking of Joe Wood Jr, he had a great weekend overall.  Besides winning the super sprint feature, he took the #71 champ sprint owned by JD Porter to a couple of strong runs.  Wood took the feature win at Brill Motor Speedway on Saturday night and backed that with a 4th place run in the Sunday champ sprint feature at OKC.  Congrats to car owner JD, I'm sure he's still on top of the world after the Saturday night win.

Creek County Speedway points leader Brent Bates finally got a win at CCS this Saturday night over a 10 car field.  Nick Lucito was 2nd but got blackflagged for contact with Bates after the race.  Frank Sudduth moved up to the 2nd place spot with Jackie York, Ricky York, and Waylon Weaver rounding out the top 5.

No ASCS Sooner Region racing to speak of this weekend, their next race is the 13th at Cowtown, followed by Creek County Speedway on the 20th.  The Sooner Region website still has the S Coffeyville race on their site, but word from Coffeyville is that the ASCS sprints will not run there and are being replace by a Sept 19th race featuring the champ sprints.  More to come on that front...

That is all for the news for this week.  We should have pictures from the OCRS action this week.  Also, video from the OCRS races will probably be up next weekend as I just don't think I will have time during the week to get those up.  Next weekend will see action at CCS and Brill, and the Lawton Speedway championship Saturday for those in that part of the state.

Until next time....

Goodman Survives CCS

Mike Goodman survived a wild crash filled feature and took home the victory at Creek County Speedway this past Saturday night.  Goodman held off Kenneth Walker for the win.  Bryan Parker finished 3rd in the sprint feature and also took home the modified win.  Waylon Weaver, Johnny Kent, Danny Smith, and Jackie York were among those who flipped at some point or another.  Out of 23 cars, only 9 were able to complete the race.  CCS was supposed to have the sprints off next week to allow them to race at West Siloam with the OCRS, but they apparently have changed their mind.

Full results for CCS:

HEAT 1 - 1, Brent Bates. 2, Kevin Cummings. 3, Tim Kent. 4, Len Larkin. 5, Robert Claunch. 6, Ron Murphy. 7, Tom Deckard. 8, Frank Sudduth.

HEAT 2 - 1, Danny Smith. 2, Kenneth Walker. 3, Johnny Kent. 4, Waylon Weaver. 5, Ricky York. 6, David Stephenson. DNS: Evan Sewell.

HEAT 3 - 1, Zach Beeler. 2, Bryan Parker. 3, Jamie Passmore. 4, Mike Goodman. 5, Nicholas Lucito. 6, Jackie York. 7, Brian Roberts. 8, Daniel Calvert.

A FEATURE - 1, Mike Goodman. 2, Kenneth Walker. 3, Bryan Parker. 4, Evan Sewell. 5, Ricky York. 6, Brent Bates. 7, Brian Roberts. 8, Robert Claunch. 9, Ron Murphy. 10, David Stephenson. 11, Danny Smith. 12, Kevin Cummings. 13, Jamie Passmore. 14, Zach Beeler. 15, Tim Kent. 16, Waylon Weaver. 17, Frank Sudduth. 18, Johnny Kent. 19, Nicholas Lucito. 20, Tom Deckard. 21, Jackie York. 22, Len Larkin. DNS: Daniel Calvert.

At Brill Motor Speedway in Meeker, Brian Bishop took home his 2nd consecutive win, holding off Dustin Buntin and Cody Metscher.

The ASCS Sooner Region was supposed to have a couple of races this weekend but were taken off the card down in Texas.  The Gulf South region raced at Waco and Cowtown.  Sooner Region regular Kolt Walker got his first ASCS win at Cowtown Saturday night.  The next Sooner Region race is Sept 13 at Cowtown.

The OCRS will race at Outlaw Motor Speedway on Friday night and West Siloam Speedway on Saturday night.  It does not look like that Sunday race I had hinted at will come to be.  Racing at Outlaw starts at 8PM, while West Siloam starts at 7pm, not the 6pm that is reported on the OCRS site.  West Siloam has ran at 7PM throughout the summer and will not change back to 6pm until Sept 6th, per their website.  With no ASCS action for our local drivers, the car count might be pretty decent, especially Friday night at Outlaw when the CCS boys can show up as well.  Both shows should have a full field of cars, however, so plan to attend both races.

State Fair Speedway this past Friday night saw Sheldon Barksdale take the win.  This Friday night both the super sprints and champ sprints are in action.  Also, Sunday is CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY at State Fair Speedway with all classes running.  I am currently planning on going Sunday night to complete a 3 race weekend.

Sorry for no new video here recently.  My camera did not want to operate for a while.  The problem is fixed and I should probably have video from all 3 events I will be at this weekend.

That is all for this rather short news weekend, especially with the Sooner Region getting cancelled.  The next update should probably come on Labor Day after the full weekend of racing.   See you this weekend

Bacon Sweeps Oklahoma TNT Plus More!

This update is brought to you by Liquid Designs, for all of your paint and customization needs call Danny at Liquid Designs.  I'm back from vacation with a lot of news to report, so lets get to it.

Brady Bacon swept the two Sprint Bandits TNT shows in Oklahoma, taking Wednesday night over Dave Darland in Oklahoma City and then following it by holding off Robert Ballou and the rain Thursday at Creek County Speedway.  30 cars were in the pits for the Oklahoma City show and it looked like a showdown between Bacon and Darland was going to be in store.  However Darland was facing some handling issues and Bacon took home the win.  Thomas Meseraull was on the pole for the feature at Creek County Speedway with Coleman Gulick, Darland, Ballou, Bacon, and others gunning for him.  Kevin Swindell took a ride on the first lap but was OK.  Daron Clayton came from the very back to get 4th spot and looked like he was going to get to Bacon and Ballou, but his line went away and he held on for 4th.  Clayton likely would have been up front but had to come from the B instead because he failed to report to the scales after winning his qualifying heat.  Bacon went on to win the preliminary feature at Lakeside Speedway while Dave Darland took the Sprint Bandit 2008 TNT championship.  I was very impressed with Clayton, who is the points leader at Gas City, IN.  He knew which line was going to work best at Creek and he drove it hard.  I was also very impressed with Brady Bacon.  I always thought he was a good driver but after the TNT race I could tell how much he really has improved over the past couple of years.

Out local racers did not fare so well at the Sprint Bandits event.  Cody Cordell and Jamie Passmore were 13th and 14th in the feature.  Danny Smith was the only local who did not have to transfer from the B-feature, but fell out of the A with some mechanical problems.  Frank Sudduth and Shane Pace were both at the back of the B feature.  Sudduth seemed to be underpowered but drove a good race and Pace was battling with handling issues.

The micros put on a good show out there as well, I had forgotten how fast they were out at CCS.  The midgets were fun to watch during the heat races but the feature was full of yellows and I left after a handful of laps.  Rafe Essary and Randy Timms were out in the midgets, good to see them get some midget action.

ASCS Sooner Region action this weekend saw Robert Sellers take the win at Lawton Speedway last night while Nick Smith took the win in the Friday night OKC feature and Sean McClelland won the makeup feature at OKC on Friday night as well.  Brian McClelland saw his points lead shrink as Kolt Walker finished ahead of him in all 3 features this weekend.  Joe Wood Jr lost a little ground as well as he is 70 points behind Walker and 99 points behind McClelland.  The next Sooner Region races are this weekend at Devil's Bowl and Heart O Texas Speedway vs. the Gulf South Region.

Mike Goodman won at Creek County Speedway Saturday night over a 20 car field.  Evan Sewell got a 2nd place while Danny Smith took 3rd place. Points leader Brent Bates was 5th.  Bates is now 91 points ahead of Smith for the points lead even though Smith has 3 less starts.  Goodman, Sewell, and Brian Roberts won the heat races for the evening.  Bryan Parker pulled a double duty shift, running 7th in the sprints and 12th in the modifieds.

Brian Bishop took the feature win at Meeker this past Saturday.  Cody Metscher was last, most likely he had problems and did not finish the race.  Matt Sherrell was also credited with an 11th place finish. It was Bishops 1st win of the year at Meeker.

The OCRS may have a couple of new races for the end of the year in the work, but nothing is finalized yet.  Until the OCRS announces it I won't say where the races may be.  One race may be at the very end of the year, and the other....well, anyone up for a triple race weekend over Labor Day weekend? 7 races officially left for the OCRS (counting the wing-non-wing and CCS as 2 races).  Next up for the OCRS is Labor Day Weekend, where as of right now Outlaw is on tap for Friday night and West Siloam is planned for Saturday night.

Unless something important breaks between now and then the next update should be next Sunday.  I'd also like to wish an early Happy Birthday to Wesley Weaver, Waylon Weaver's brother and crew chief.  His birthday is next Saturday, so maybe Waylon can bring home a win for Wes.

Be back later.

Goodman, Cordell, Wood Jr among winners

Mike Goodman took two features this past weekend while Cody Cordell and Joe Wood Jr were other winners.

Mike Goodman won the OCRS feature at Outlaw Motor Speedway this past Friday night among a 21 car field.  Jackie York took a hard tumble down the backstretch and totaled his sprinter in his heat race but was luckily uninjured.  He was the CCS points leader before the tumble and was not able to get a car back together for the next night, dropping him to 3rd in the standings.  Goodman and Jamie Passmore were battling for a good amount of the first half of the feature before Goodman got around Passmore for good.  Danny Smith took 3rd place, with Matt Sherrell and Johnny Hotrod Kent rounding out the top 5.

HEAT 1 - 1, Cody Cordell. 2, Jamie McDonald. 3, Shane Pace. 4, Burt Davis. 5, Tim Kent. 6, Ricky York. 7, Jackie York.

DNS: Jackie York.

The next night at Creek County Speedway saw the OCRS wing/non-wing combo show.  27 cars were on hand and Cody Cordell and Mike Goodman took the feature wins, although it was Jamie Passmore walking away with the overall top prize money.  Cody Cordell looked strong on his way to winning the winged portion of the event over Matt Sherrell.  Cordell and Sherrell were again looking strong in the non-wing part of the show but Cordell spun out and Sherrell was unable to avoid him, sending both to the back and ultimately ending Sherrell's night.  Dean Drake was leading the non-wing part of the show while Goodman and Passmore were all over his tail.  Goodman finally took a chance with 2 laps left to go and was able to get around Drake but not without some contact.  The contact was enough to cause Drake some front end problems but Drake was able to keep his car going to a 5th place finish. Drake was also running well in the winged portion of the event earlier in the evening before some contact with Shane Pace allowed several cars to get by.  Evan Sewell took a tumble in the non-wing B feature while Johnny Hotrod Kent took a nasty ride in the non-wing A feature.  Both Sewell and Kent were OK and their cars did not suffer much damage either.

Joe Wood Jr successfully went for his 3rd win in a row in ASCS Sooner Region action at Kennedale Speedway Park on Friday night. Wood Jr also went for win #4 Saturday night at Cowtown but came up just short, running 2nd to Brad Welborn.  Wood was lucky to finish 2nd however as the original 2nd place car of Sherman Davis failed to go to the scales, ending in a DQ for Davis and moving Wood up to the 2nd place spot.  Tulsa area racer Brian McClelland is still ahead in the Sooner Region points but Wood is closing in to 81 points of McClelland while Kolt Walker still is not that far behind, 49 points behind B-Mac.

Loyd Clevenger won the feature at Brill Motor Speedway this past Saturday night, ending Cody Metscher's run of several feature wins in a row.  Meanwhile, Chris Burns took the feature win in the super sprints at State Fair Speedway while Robert Sellers won in the champ sprints there.

Sorry this update is a little shorter than usual, but with the 360 Nationals and Knoxville Nationals on tap there's not much going on.  Sort of the "calm before the storm" type of a situation I suppose.  OCRS photos should be up on the site shortly.  I will try to squeeze an update in next week, but I am not sure if I will get it in as I do not think I will have internet service for the next week.   Have a nice week and enjoy the races everyone.

News Update 7/20

Sorry for the lack of an update this past week, time just got away from me and I didn't get it done.  Anyway, now for the results and news from this past week in Oklahoma racing action

First off, congrats goes to Jason Johnson, the 2008 Toyota Tundra ASCS Speedweek winner.  Johnson took the features at Creek County and Lawton Speedway. With the solid Speedweek run Johnson now has the points lead over Gary Wright and Wayne Johnson in the ASCoT tour.  Gary Taylor took home wins in Texarkana and Oklahoma City, while Gary Wright won at Little Rock and the Devil's Bowl.  If you want to see an awesome footage of Rafe Essary's flip at CCS on Monday, go to highvistavideo.com and go down slightly to the ASCS Speedweek area of the page.  Essary's flip has been the talk of the racing world at CCS this past week and if you did not see this flip in person, this footage is something that is a MUST see.  It made one of the local news stations highlights also, however they completely butchered Rafe's name.

Johnny "Hotrod" Kent and Mike "Whizbang" Goodman took the double features at Creek County Speedway this past Saturday night.  The double features were set up due to the rainout of the previous Saturday's features.  Kent won a wild first feature after the time limit expired as there were so many accidents in the first race.  Brent Bates, Ron Murphy, and Ricky York flipped but were all back in time for the next set of heat races and features.  Mike Goodman blew his primary car's motor before the racing even started.  He missed the 1st feature because David Stephenson was driving the backup car in that race, but Goodman did run the heats and 2nd feature in the backup car and won the feature by just a little bit over Danny $mith.  After all was said and done Jackie York emerged as the new points leader at CCS, with York, Bates, and Frank Sudduth all within 6 points of each other.  Jamie McDonald, Waylon Weaver, and Mike Goodman won the heat races on the night.  These results via the Creek County Speedway website:

DNS: Robert Claunch.

Cody Metscher, at age 14 years old, won his 3rd feature of the year Saturday night at Brill Motor Speedway, and is taking a commanding lead in the points chase.  This kid is doing pretty well for his first year in a sprint car as he previosly ran micros or kid sprints.  Meeker results:

Heat 1. 1. James Fabian (8J), Choctaw; 2. Brian Bishop (77), OKC; 3. David Lee Lambert (66), Herington, KS.; 4. Fred Mattox (26M), Drumright; 5. Harlan Sale (4S), Yukon; DNS. Drew Harless (58H), Paden; Eddie Guinn (88), Choctaw.

Heat 2. 1. Loyd Clevenger (80), Newalla; 2. Jackie Green (61), Stroud; 3. Cody Metscher (91), Bethel; 4. Bucky Buckman (65C), OKC; 5. Andrew Marshalla (87), Shawnee; 6. Dustin Buntin (37), Wheatland.

A Feature 1. Cody Metscher (91), Bethel; 2. Loyd Clevenger (80), Newalla; 3. David Lee Lambert (66), Herington, Ks.; 4. Brian Bishop (77), OKC; 5. Jackie Green (61), Stroud; 6. James Fabian (8J), Choctaw; 7. Fred Mattox (26M), Drumright; 8. Drew Harless (58H), Paden; 9. Harlan Sale (4S), Yukon; 10. Bucky Buckman (65), OKC; 11. Andrew Marshalla (87), Shawnee; 12. Dustin Buntin (37), Wheatland; DNS. Eddie Guinn (88), Choctaw.

With Oklahoma City hosting the ASCS Speedweek event this past Friday and Lawton hosting the Saturday show, not much other news is around for those areas other than the Speedweek recap found above.

This weekend the OCRS makes another try at a triple race weekend, with Outlaw Motor Speedway hosting the sprints on Friday night, and then the 2 shows in 1 Wing/Non-Wing event at Creek County Speedway the next night.

Regular shows this weekend at OKC, Lawton, and Meeker, so those are all solid choices as well if you are a sprint car fan.

The Sooner Region ASCS cars are going to try again for a Kennedale double as they will be at Kennedale Speedway on Friday and Cowtown Speedway on Saturday.  Those tracks are next door to each other and the last time they tried to do both shows the Cowtown portion got rained out.

Also would like to take a moment to acknowledge Owasso's Daryn Pittman.  Pittman is starting to catch fire on the World of Outlaws trail as he has won a few features recently, including the King's Royal at Eldora Speedway.

RUMOR CONTROL:  I would also like to clarify some of the rumors regarding Tulsa Speedway.  It is TRUE that there is a group of local people (including Mike McClelland, as Don Hubbard reported in his Hoseheads column) that are trying to get the funds together to take over Tulsa Speedway.  However, nothing has been finished as of yet and as we all know, this is not the first time someone has tried to get their hands on Tulsa Speedway.  Also, rumor has been going around that Emmett Hahn is involved in some way.  For now I will that is still what I would call a "rumor," but will add that if something does happen with Tulsa Speedway, there is a decent chance Hahn will be involved.  So in short, there is something going on, but NOTHING has been finalized or is anywhere close to being finalized as of yet.  We'll keep you posted if anything comes of this.

That is all for now, if any more news develops I will post it here.

Goodman Takes OCRS at Tri-State Speedway

Mike Goodman took his 2nd OCRS feature win of the year at Tri-State Speedway this past Sunday night.  A rain-out postponed the event 1 day to Sunday night and all 17 cars that showed up on Saturday stayed around for Sunday's show.  However Goodman proved to be the best of the bunch as he prevailed from the pole.  Jamie Passmore tried to get around Goodman a couple of times but never could find a spot that worked well enough.  Matt Sherrell was getting a little lower than anyone else and the extra moisture in the bottom of the track helped him to a 3rd place run while Danny Smith ran 4th.  Shane Pace also ran a little lower than most people and was able to get a top 5 finish, which helped him take a slim 5 point margin over Rafe Essary for the 5th place in point standings.  Essary finished 8th.  Waylon Weaver was running very strong when the engine gave out in the W car (or 94W as OCRS scores it).  Also a thanks to Jeff Garnett for making the long tow to represent the OKC area.  Between Garnett, Eddie Guinn, and Loyd Clevenger, the OKC area has been well represented in the past few weeks in the OCRS and hopefully that will continue.  The OCRS and Tri-State are looking to get another date at the end of the year for a large race.  Details will surely be announced when they become official.

HEAT 1 - 1, Mike Goodman. 2, Danny Smith. 3, Dean Drake, Jr. 4, Brian Parker. 5, Rafe Essary. 6, Johnny Kent.

HEAT 3 - 1, Jamie Passmore. 2, Matt Sherrell. 3, Shane Pace. 4, Tim Kent. 5, Burt Davis.

A FEATURE - 1, Mike Goodman. 2, Jamie Passmore. 3, Danny Smith. 4, Matt Sherrell. 5, Shane Pace. 6, Brian Parker. 7, Jamie McDonald. 8, Rafe Essary. 9, Evan Sewell. 10, Dean Drake, Jr. 11, Travis Jenkins. 12, Tim Kent. 13, Jeff Garnett. 14, Waylon Weaver. 15, Zach Beeler. 16, Burt Davis. 17, Johnny Kent.

Tri-State's Number 1 Fan

Robert Albertson is known as Tri-State Speedway's number 1 fan.  He is in a wheelchair after having to have his leg amputated due to being diabetic.  Robert will also have to have his other leg amputated in the near future.  This past weekend Tri-State officials wanted to give him a special treat, so they got him into one of their push trucks and took him into the pit area in the infield.  He wanted to get a close-up look at the sprint cars.  Officials took him to look at Waylon Weaver's car.  Waylon was nice enough to offer to let Robert sit in the car and have his picture taken.  We at OKsprints.com would like to wish Robert the best of luck on his surgery and we hope to see him again the next time the OCRS visits Tri-State.

Cody Cordell wins at Creek County Speedway

In Creek County Speedway news, Cody Cordell picked up his first win at CCS this past weekend over a 15 car field.  Cordell beat out Jackie York and Frank Sudduth, who finished 2nd and 3rd.  Len Larkin and Keith Bolton rounded out the top 5.  Ricky York took a ride when York and Nicholas Lucito got together in turn 3.  Lucito recovered to finish 6th but York's car was a mess after the flip.  One notable driver that was not there was points leader Roy Larkin.  Larkin was in a pit incident a few weeks ago and although he was not suspended, it appears that he is out of a ride.  Frank Sudduth was driving the former #52, which now has 7f graphics on it.  Sudduth's normal car was being driven by Danny Brown.
